What is Thatcham Approved Security?
Officially known as the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, Thatcham Research has been at the forefront of vehicle safety, security and repair standards. Established by the motor insurance industry in 1969, Thatcham is a product research company that defines the industry benchmark for vehicle security systems.
Thatcham categorise vehicle security products that meet requirements depending on the product’s functions. The category system ensures that products are always fit for use on the roads.
Thatcham works with law enforcement agencies, the automotive industry and insurers to assess potential physical and electronic vulnerabilities within vehicles and identify the technology and ways to mitigate theft. The products are Thatcham certified are designed to combat different methods of theft.
One of the main reasons people get a Thatcham approved device is to lower the cost of their insurance. The higher the level of security your vehicle has, the harder it will be to steal. This means that your car will be safer, and your premiums cheaper.
A factory-fitted Thatcham-approved device from alarm, immobiliser or tracker makes your car more secure and this is reflected in cheaper insurance premiums.
S7 Certified Van Tracker Systems
For the purposes of vehicle trackers, car tracker systems that achieve category S7 certification are regarded as stolen location systems that are activated once a vehicle has been stolen and enable the vehicle to have its location tracked.
S5 Certified Van Tracker Systems
GPS car tracker systems certified as S5, formerly known as Cat 5, are equipped with additional security features which means that they will pro-actively alert the Monitoring Centre, if the authorised driver recognition system is not in place when the vehicle is moved.
S5 Plus Van Tracker Systems
S5 rated car tracker systems which are advertised as “Plus” trackers are not part of Thatcham’s certification programme but indicate to customers that these systems will generally have the remote immobilisation feature built in. This means the system has the ability to receive a remotely sent signal to activate the immobiliser. As a result, the engine will not start again until the system has been reset.
